Whiskey has a long history. From the Gaelic, usquebaugh, from uisce, “water,” and bethad “of life,” the word follows in the tradition of the Latin aqua vitae. Production began in the British Isles, where grapes were scarce. In Scotland in 1494, Friar John Cor received a batch of malt “by order of the kind,” and began producing the aquavitae.
When Henry VIII dissolved the many monasteries of his country, whiskey production became a business. At this time, whiskey was very raw and potent. Eventually, people came to understand that whiskey tastes better after aging, and the process became more refined. Through the years many taxes and bans have been placed on this drink, yet it still remains one of the most coveted and high-priced of all beverages.
There are many different kinds of whiskey: single malt, vatted malt, pot still, blended, andmore. This blog will discuss the whiskey producing process, different types, new and exciting cocktails, histories and stories about whiskey, and more. The common theme: whiskey. So if you love whiskey, and want to learn and read about it, you’ve come to the right place.
